Performance:
You see more and more electronic devices for lower prices. To
measure the temperature of the humans there are already cheap LCD devices in the
form of thermometer stick. Even infra red ear measurement devices are on the
market but the limit of that was 45 degrees Celsius as highest reading.
Now the company Conrad Electronics (www.conrad.com)
has in his catalog under part number 699.63.07 a good working infra red
temperature gun we can use for measuring the temperature of our engines
with out touching them.
How to use? simple!
When the car comes in we aim at the cooling by just making a slow circle of 3
centimeter diameter at a 6 centimeter distance will always give you the actual
highest reading and that is what we are looking for. If you think you made a
mistake just press the grey button again that will erase the previous readings
and will store the new ones. For the convenience of the lifetime of the
batteries I removed one wire running to the backlit LED. This backlit stays ON
until the gun is switching of automatically!
If you measure the glowplug temperature it should range average between 120 and
140 degrees Celsius.
The device work best when aimed at black
colored cooling heads.
Readings on silver or shinny colors surfaces are not reliable and can give false
readings!

Verdict:
The size is handy and can be used for left and right handed
people. The readability is perfect and that makes this device a real wannahave
No 1 for the real hardcore races. We used the the infra red gun during several
races and found out it is worth any penny paid for it. It is at the moment the
cheapest infra red gun and has the nice feature of reading minimum and maximum
values and keeping them memorized in the display as long as it is switched on.
For EFRA and many national sanctioned races the use of
other electronics in the car beside receiver and servo's is not permitted.
So
incar temp gauges like the EOS, MIP and VENOM devices are not permitted.
So for real hardcore and competition racers this is a good way to take care of
their engine temperature when other devices are not allowed!
