Step 29

h7-step29-008.jpg (19907 bytes)

The manual does not show anything about painting the body except from some text. The body comes pre-cut from the factory and that is nice. Also it has a protective overspray cover film on the outside of the body. If you are going to fit the body on the car, do not do that with the airfilter already on the engine. The airfilter connector pushes against the body what makes fitting less easy. Once the body fits the car OK, you can refit the airfilter. The front mounting hole in the body is factory drilled too. The rear is not.
h7-step29-006.jpg (43020 bytes) Fit the body on the car and secure the front body post with a body clip. Although the body is pre cut some adjustments are needed to make sure the fuel tank lid will not touch the body when opened. Also around the engine cooling head and muffler mounting we had to remove some material for a sleek fit of the body.
h7-step29-005.jpg (39566 bytes) When the body perfectly fits the car, mark the rear body post with a felt marker and drill a 8 mm hole.
h7-step29-007.jpg (32691 bytes) This is how the body should fit looked at the right side
h7-step29-009.jpg (22606 bytes) The kit comes with pre cut self adhesive paper window masks!
h7-step29-022.jpg (46051 bytes) Do not throw the used window mask sheet away! When you have used the window masks itself.
We can use the sheet and scan it to the PC and then worked over in a painting program on the PC to make custom windows masks yourself! How to use and fit them if you like to do it that way read below.
Here for example the windows are designed to give a tinted glass feeling.
Everything is possible!
h7-step29-010.jpg (28875 bytes) Lightly scratch the inside of the body (except for the window areas) with waterproof sanding paper until the body looks a little matte. No problem as soon as the body is painted you will not see any scratch. The scratching is to make the paint bond better to the body. Then clean the inside with warm soap water and dry it with a paper towel. Now apply the windows masks at the inside of the body.
h7-step29-011.jpg (23955 bytes) Make sure the window masks are at the edges neatly pressed to the body so no paint can crawl underneath it.
h7-step29-012.jpg (27311 bytes) Remove all excessive windows masks at the places where there is no body material.
h7-step29-013.jpg (59825 bytes) So we now have the body ready to do something different!
From XXXmain we received a brochure, lexan picture glue and some decals as requested for testing.
Normally you add the self adhesive decals after the body is painted at the outside.
For the XXXmain decals you see in the picture that is correct these are self adhesive.
If you have pictures, logos or anything else from some cool magazines you can cut them and then glue them inside the body too.
That is where this glue was is designed for.
However we go an other route and now place our own computer designed logos, graphics or anything else imaginable that is printed on paper at the inside using the XXXmain lexan picture glue!
Click here for the "how to use" manual from XXXmain for this lexan picture glue.
h7-step29-021.jpg (109811 bytes) On the computer I made some own graphic designs using Corel Draw and Photo Shop.
All designs are possible. I combined all graphics on one A4 size document.
Remember that when you use logo's, pictures or graphics from any company you could brake the copyright law.
So only use those graphics that are copyright free!
h7-step29-014.jpg (39422 bytes) I printed it on 720 dpi coated inkjet paper weighing 70 grams/meter with a Brother MFC 580 Multi Function inkjet printer.
Print in the highest resolution possible in my case 1440 dpi.
h7-step29-015.jpg (55413 bytes) These are all the logo's and self adhesive decals (that need to be put at the outside of the body) we are going to use for our body.
h7-step29-017.jpg (38028 bytes) First cut the logo's from the paper sheet with a sharp scissor. Try to stay at much as possible at the edge of the logo.
h7-step29-016.jpg (32451 bytes) Take the XXXmain lexan picture glue and open the bottle and remove the seal. Put the logo on a smooth surface like a glass plate. Use a paint brush and evenly spread a thin layer glue over the logo. Do not use to much glue as this need to be pressed away later.
Try first if the ink is water resistant by applying some glue on a piece of printed color scrap paper.
h7-step29-020.jpg (41098 bytes) Now apply the logo at the inside of the body on the right place. You can move around the logo if it is not in the correct spot slowly and carefully. Once it is in the right spot carefully press from the center of the logo to the outside all excessive glue and air bubbles away.
Do not use excessive force while pressing as this may tear/break the logo. All excessive glue at the edges can be removed with a wet towel directly.
h7-step29-018.jpg (38460 bytes) When all paper logo's are placed it looks like this from the right side.
h7-step29-019.jpg (36414 bytes) When all paper logo's are placed it looks like this from the left side.
Let the paper logo's dry for 12 hours before applying the cover paint.
We will use a single white color only to finish the body. That may look very dull but wait and see!
h7-step29-023.jpg (26743 bytes) Take the paint spray bottle or an airbrush gun and apply the color you like in 5 thin layers making a cross pattern at 15 centimeters distance. Let each layer dry until the paint is just picking when you touch it then spray the next layer. After the fifth layer let it dry 24 hours.
The picture shows the first layer. We have chosen to only use a single color.
h7-step29-029.jpg (26864 bytes) If you have used water based paints, finish the body with a layer water and fuel proof cover paint.
For that I use a simple 400 ml spray can from the hardware store with white
acrylic paint.
h7-step29-024.jpg (36365 bytes) The body sprayed still with the protective cover film on it.
h7-step29-027.jpg (37754 bytes) Remove the protective cover film from the outside of the body
h7-step29-028.jpg (37858 bytes) The body sprayed without the protective cover film.
h7-step29-030.jpg (37110 bytes) Then remove the window masks from the inside of the body.
h7-step29-025.jpg (43768 bytes) Here you can see that the custom made design logo's attached with XXXmain lexan picture glue to the inside of the body are looking fine. Even the TWF8 logo printed on the white paper looks neat when sprayed with a white background color.
h7-step29-031.jpg (44061 bytes) Apply the rest of the decals on the body and the rest of the car. Take a small glass bowl and put some water in it. Then put some drops of soap fluid in the water. Take the decal and put it through the water & soap fluid. Then put the decal on the right spot. When it is on the right spot (you now still can move it) squeeze the water from underneath the decal to the edges starting from the center until all water is removed and the decal stays on its place. Let the body dry for a few hours or use a hair dryer gun to accelerate the drying process.
h7-step29-032.jpg (44012 bytes) Mount the body.
Voila and there it is! Almost ready to roar.
h7-step29-038.jpg (38383 bytes) Use a body clips to secure it to the front body post.
h7-step29-039.jpg (41766 bytes) Use a body clips to secure it to the rear body post.
h7-step29-033.jpg (41210 bytes) Front view
h7-step29-034.jpg (34281 bytes) Right side view
h7-step29-035.jpg (35077 bytes) Left side view
h7-step29-036.jpg (51976 bytes) Rear view
h7-step29-037.jpg (56436 bytes) Top view
Nice feature the body comes 99% pre cut (that should be standard in all kits) and the window masks are also pre cut.
